Indigenous Knowledge in Earthquake Risk Reduction to Protect the Casbah of Algiers, Algeria

Prof, Djillali Benouar, PERIPERI U, USTHB, Algeria

12 August 2021 - 12h00 GMT

The Casbah of Algiers has suffered several destructive earthquakes from its construction during the 16th century to present, yet it has survived better than most modern infrastructure in the region. It is assumed that if the Casbah survived all these destructive earthquakes because of the preventive earthquake-resistant traditional measures which played an important role in the resistance of the structures against the frequent earthquakes which impact the region.

This presentation by Professor Djillali Benouar, a member of PERIPERI U and AfSTAG discusses some of the traditional measures used in the urban, architectural and the structural aspects which have protected the Casbah for centuries, and the lessons which can be applied to modern engineering and urban planning.
