AFRICA DAY 2022

In line with Africa Day which is on 25 May, Stellenbosch University celebrates the event through various events and opinion pieces published around this date. 

This year, the Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wim de Villiers will again host the Annual Africa Day Lecture on 31 May 2022, During the event, Dr. Chidi Chike Achebe (son of literary giant Chinua ACHEBE), a physician executive, will be the keynote speaker with the topic “Intellectuals as Nation Builders".  The event will be coordinated jointly by the Centre for the Study of the Afterlife of Violence and the Reparative Quest and the Centre for Collaboration in Africa​​.

In addition, the Tygerberg International (TI) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) will host an event on 25 May 2022 during which Dr John Mark Bwanika, a global eHealth scholar will share his experience in clinical research in infectious diseases, entrepreneurship, and eHealth with the topic "Technology and Innovations Advancing Health in Africa"​

Dr John Mark Bwanika is a global eHealth scholar. His experience spans clinical research in infectious diseases, entrepreneurship, and eHealth. Dr Bwanika is a founding partner and Director of The Medical Concierge Group (TMCG), an African digital health company. He is also Chief Operations and Research Officer at RocketHealth, a leading service provider of tele-medicine and telehealth services in East Africa.​

The event is jointly organised by the Chair in Historical Trauma and Transformation, Professor Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela​ and the Centre for Collaboration in Africa.

Dr. Chidi Chike Achebe (son of literary giant Chinua ACHEBE), a physician executive, received an MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health, his MD at Dartmouth Medical School and an MBA degree at Yale University’s School of Management.​
