African Risk Methods School 2019 - Addis Ababa

The African continent is experiencing massive shift towards urbanisation with ever growing and developing cities home to millions of people. With growing cities come increased exposure and vulnerability to a number of risks. In particular African cities are frequently best by flooding, droughts, severe storms, landslides and seismic events such as earthquakes. Such risks threaten the livelihoods of households, safety of urban communities as well as jeopardise development gains made by African states.

In the face of such complex, evolving risk profiles across the African continent, Partners Enhancing Resilience for People Exposed to Risks (PERIPERI U) together with UNESCO, have come together to develop the second African Risk Methods Schools (ARMS): Focus on Urban Risks, Hazards and  Vulnerabilities

ARMS is an intensive, immersive opportunity for emerging academics, practitioners and scientists to rapidly build essential skills and enhance capacity in disaster risk. The courses offer complex, contemporary African risk and resilience research grounded in application.

Course themes for ARMS II include:

•Integrated Disaster Risk Reduction Science and Action
•Understanding the fundamentals of Disaster Risk
•Urban Geophysical and Hydrological Risks

ARMS will be held in Addis Ababa between 28 October – 2 November 2019. Participants of the ARMS courses will have their travel, accommodation and conference costs and arrangements covered by UNESCO. More detailed information about the ARMS courses and the Application process for ARMS will be made available online through the Periperi U website shortly.
