Fifth Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, Cancun, Mexico, 24-26 May 2017

The Fifth Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction will be held in Cancun, Mexico on 22-26 May, 2017. The Global Platform is the most important international forum dedicated to the disaster risk reduction agenda, and this will be the first time it has been staged outside Geneva. The Global Platform will mark the first opportunity for the international community to review global progress on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, which was adopted in Japan in 2015. More than 5,000 participants are expected, including policy makers and disaster risk managers.

"It's my pleasure to extend a cheerful welcome to you all to Mexico and the Fifth Global Global Platform in 2017. As host country our desire is to fulfill your expectations. We are convinced that all sectors, communities of interest and constituencies, together will move forward to make a reality the opportunities outlined in the Sendai Framework for a better disaster risk informed and prepared world. We are currently working arduously for your visit and hoping that you will enjoy our centuries of traditions, flavors, colors, cultural diversity, recreational sites and hospitality. The road to the Global Platform in Mexico is yours and starts now! "

Mr. Luis Felipe Puente,

National Coordinator of Civil Protection, Mexico

"UNISDR is grateful to Mexico for hosting this important gathering in Cancun. We hope to encourage all UN member states to follow the example of Mexico and others by going beyond disaster management to tackle the risks which drive disaster losses, including poverty, unplanned urbanization, environmental degradation and poor risk governance." Robert Glasser,

Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction
