PERIPERI U Talks Session: African Indigenous Perspectives on Disaster Risk Climate Change Nexus by Gatkuoth Kai from the AUC, DRR Unit

Date: 10 Jun 2021 to: 10 Jun 2021

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

You are invited to attend our PERIPERI U Talks Session: African Indigenous Perspectives on Disaster Risk Climate Change Nexus by Gatkuoth Kai from the AUC, DRR Unit at 12h00 Central African Time (CAT), 10 June 2021

Increasingly global and continental policy frameworks such as the Africa Plan of Action and the Sendai Framework have promoted the importance of indigenous knowledge and advocated for an enhanced role in initiatives to mitigate disaster risk and climate change. However, in reality such knowledge is rarely drawn upon or utilised to inform development and guide implementation of policies. Consequently that lack of application of indigenous knowledge, particularly at local level, undermines participation of local/rural communities in implementation of Disaster Risk reduction policies, and by extension, the implementation of the Africa Plan of Action and the Sendai Framework.

In this PERIPERI U Talks session Gatkuoth Kai, Technical Coordinator for the African Union’s Disaster Risk Reduction unit, will discuss these issues, as well as how African indigenous knowledge and practices for resilience may be applied to mitigate climate-sensitive disaster risks amid climate change and disaster risk reduction policies by African communities and their governments
